A brokerage just notified us of an incident that occurred at their office today (Tuesday, May 4, 2021), as a warning to other REALTORS® and to share a safety reminder.
A man and woman stopped by a real estate office, and although the agent on duty was alone, she decided to let them in. The couple asked for help finding a short-term rental, then mentioned they didn’t have a cell phone and wanted the agent to start inquiries for them right away. The woman abruptly got up and went outside, leaving the agent alone with the man. The agent then said she unfortunately could not help him right at the moment, stating she had to leave for an appointment, and asked him to leave. The man got very angry and after a few more requests by the agent to leave, he eventually exited the building, then began pounding on the office doors and windows yelling at the agent who went to the back of the office to a secure location. The police were called, spoke with the couple, and a report was filed.
The brokerage involved asked us to share this with our membership to give others a heads up and to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior, and to remind members to not meet with people alone, at their office or otherwise.
