BRR members recently had the opportunity to take part in a Boise School District tour highlighting the improvements brought about by the district’s 2017 bond. The bond campaign, which was supported by BRR RPAC dollars and Issues Mobilization funds, has allowed the school district to offer improved technical programs and facility improvements at each school. The $172.5 million bond supported the 10-year educational facilities master plan that aims to meet the needs regarding schools in poor condition, ease overcrowding and improve educational adequacy while ensuring improved facilities at all 48 schools as well as major building projects for 22 schools. The bond successfully passed with a historic 86% voting in favor.
The tour showcased the new Dennis Technical Education Center (DTEC). This center allows students to take courses on dental hygiene, electrical, plumbing and heating-air conditioning job training courses among many more opportunities. All told, DTEC offers 17 technical programs. The tour also showcased the new ceramics program addition to Timberline High School and the new Amity campus. The Amity school was rebuilt next to the old structure that faced roof leaks and groundhogs in the grass-covered roof. The other new structures through the district (classrooms, gymnasiums, common areas) are being built with future needs in mind. They will easily be configured and added on to when needed for school expansion in the future.
The partnership between BRR and The Boise School District to pass this bond is a great example of RPAC dollars at-work improving our community and keeping up with growth. With the passage of the 2017 bond, the district is set up to address the challenges of a changing workforce and educational needs for many years to come.
