We had another great turnout for our 59 Minute Meeting on May 1st! Thank you for joining us and engaging in conversations around local public policy issues.

Our guests were Garden City Mayor John Evans and Director of Development Services Jenah Thornborrow. Mayor Evans talked about some of Garden City’s stats; such as how it occupies just over four-square miles of land, six miles of river, and is home to over 2,000 businesses and 12,000 residents. The Boise River and three major highways run through Garden City: Chinden, State, and Glenwood.

The Mayor and Thornborrow also discussed new residential developments, a new charter school, partnerships between Garden City and the City of Boise for the whitewater park and the 36th Street bridge, and the possible future of the fairgrounds. The mayor mentioned the success they’ve seen in creating affordable housing by partnering with NeighborWorks Boise on several projects.

As numerous new businesses have sprouted up in town, residents and business owners are increasingly creating a sense of place by adding murals and art to otherwise blank buildings. The commercial growth in Garden City isn’t limited to new buildings, many businesses are creatively reusing existing spaces.

In the Surel Mitchell Live-Work-Create District, between 32nd and 37th streets on the north side of Chinden Blvd, the artistic community is thriving. The district features the greenbelt, Boise River, wineries, breweries, the Visual Arts Collective, and various other art studios and galleries.

The Q & A portion of the meeting focused on the fairgrounds, instant horse-racing initiative, and new developments along the river.

59 Minute Meeting Recap: Future Economic Growth of the Boise Region

We had a full crowd on hand for our first 59 Minute Meeting of 2018! Thanks to all those who showed up and participated in our discussion focused on future economic growth in the Boise Region. Our panel of speakers included Cameron Arial, Director of Meridian Community Development; Clark Krause, Executive Director of Boise Valley Economic Partnership (BVEP); and Bobbi-Jo Meuleman, Director Idaho Department of Commerce.

Each speaker touched on the economic growth forecast from their own unique perspective and highlighted the challenges that come along with it. They also discussed the recent announcement by the US Census Bureau that declared Idaho as the fastest-growing state in the union and how that plays into the overall economic picture.

Not only is the economy in the Boise Region booming, wage increases are following suit. All industries have shown a 13% jump in wage growth during the period of 2010 – 2016 with average salaries jumping from $38k to $43k a year.

The Q & A portion of the meeting focused on growth and the underlying factors behind it. Our speakers made it clear that if residents want a voice in how the Boise Region continues to grow, they need to become more engaged in city council and planning meetings. All meeting information is publicly available on city websites throughout Ada and Gem County.

Thank you to everyone who attended our fourth and final 59 Minute Meeting for 2017! We had a packed room of BRR members who listened and participated in an interesting discussion about the future of transportation in our area. Our panel of experts included Amy Revis, District Engineer Idaho Transportation Department (ITD); Mathew Stoll, Executive Director of Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS); and Bruce Wong, Director of the Ada County Highway District (ACHD).

Our speakers highlighted how these organizations are working together to prepare for the transportation needs of the Boise region’s growing population, estimated to exceed one million people by 2036, while continuing to maintain current infrastructure and address safety issues.

Each speaker noted how Idaho’s leaders are not meeting funding requirements for current maintenance needs, let alone the new projects and expansions needed to support projected growth. During the Q & A portion of the meeting, they answered questions regarding safety, public transit, and ways to advocate for additional transportation funding.

REALTOR® advocacy efforts will play a crucial part in working with our elected leaders to ensure that our growth is well planned and adequately funded. Learn about the role of RPAC and how it enables us to elect leaders who understand the importance of properly funding transportation and other community needs.

BRR Advocacy Update | January 2017

brr-rpac2017 Idaho Legislature is in session!

Stay tuned in the coming weeks as the Idaho REALTORS® will soon release their legislative agenda, noting bills they’ll need our help to support. Boise Regional REALTORS® will work closely with IR to ensure our industry has a voice with our state’s legislative body.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Mapping Changes

Changes to proposed 100-year flood maps could affect more homeowners in Boise, Garden City, Eagle, Meridian, and Star potentially requiring the purchase of flood insurance. To identify if a home is located in this impacted area, click HERE for an interactive map.  There are questions about these maps, the timeline for implementation, and options for homeowners in newly affected areas. We encourage BRR members and homeowners to attend the following public meetings to learn more:

  • February 1, 2017, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Ada County Courthouse, 200 W Front St in Boise
  • February 2, 2017, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Lowell Scott Middle School, 13600 W McMillan Rd in Boise

59 Minute Meetings are BACK!

Mark your calendar — our first 59 Minute Meeting of 2017 is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on February 21 at BRR. We’ll be talking about education and how it impacts our community. Between the Governor’s State of the State request for a 7.9% increase in education spending, and several local school districts running bonds and levies, we’ll let you know what’s happening and how BRR and IR are involved. The Meridian Planning and Zoning commission is responsible for the policies and issues related to zoning, transportation planning and development, among other things.  Jessica is a BRR member and REALTOR® with Silverhawk Realty. She will serve a 3-year term.

Idaho Real Estate Summit 2015

The second Idaho Real Estate Summit hosted by the Ada County Association of REALTORS® was held yesterday, December 10th at  the Idaho Capitol. Topics included current housing trends and a look at our economy. Professionals from all segments of the housing industry will benefit from attending the Housing Summit.

Our Keynote speaker was Lawrence Yun the Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of Research at the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®. He will deliver insight into the National Housing Economy and a forecast for 2015. The Future of Boise Airport

Boise Airport Director Rebecca Hupp recently presented some very timely information on the future of the Boise Airport  at the ACAR 59 Minute meeting.  Topics included an air service industry overview, current air service and future opportunities.  These issues are critical to economic development and businesses locating in the Boise area.
