Q1 2018 Foundation News

The REALTORS® Community Foundation kicked off 2018 in high-gear — by introducing a voluntary foundation contribution option on the 2018 BRR dues billing, we started the year with about $9,000 to support the 2018 grant cycle. Thank you to everyone who donated!

In 2017, the Foundation granted $30,000 to local nonprofits, and almost $5,000 additional matching gifts were made to local nonprofits.  Our 2018 Foundation President, Kim Daley, has a lofty – yet achievable – goal for us this year: raise $50,000 to give back to the community! Don’t worry, there are lots of ways you can help!

Where did the Online Auction go?

2018 Auction Logo

This year, the two largest annual fundraisers for the REALTORS® Community Foundation are together for the first time! The Online Auction will run in conjunction with the 22nd Annual Give Back Golf Tournament – better highlighting the REALTORS® Community Foundation and our mission.

The online auction goes live on May 23, 2018, at 9:00 am and runs through Wednesday, June 6th.

All proceeds from the Give Back Golf Tournament and the Online Auction will support the REALTORS® Community Foundation 2018 grant cycle. There are MANY opportunities for you to participate and help us raise funds to give back to local nonprofits.

Do you have an item you would like to donate? We’d love to have it! Send us a donation form so we can include it in the auction. The auction will be advertised to our 4,400+ members through email and on social media and has the potential to be shared beyond that to the community, and friends and family far and wide. Your logo will be featured with your donated item!

Service Projects and Volunteer Opportunities

Independent Brokers Council

The REALTOR® Outreach Committee is working on coordinating service projects and volunteer opportunities. We will be participating in Paint the Town through NeighborWorks again this year, partnering teams to paint five houses. Paint the Town is Saturday, June 9th, though most of the work will be completed the week before. Let Shari Fernandez know if you or your office would like to participate.

That’s all awesome, but what’s with the new foundation name?

Hopefully, you’ve noticed that the Boise Regional REALTORS® Foundation is now the REALTORS® Community Foundation. We have the same mission: to improve the quality of life in the Boise Region through housing-related projects and grants. We are still real estate professionals giving back to our community.

When Boise Regional REALTORS® (BRR) merged with the Emmett Valley Association of REALTORS® at the end of 2017, the jurisdiction of the foundation increased to include Gem County. With the more than 4,400 BRR members located all throughout the Boise Region, we needed our name to better represent how REALTORS® are positively impacting our community through our 501(c)(3) foundation.

Are You Affected by the 2017 Spring Flooding in Ada County? Could You Be?

2017 Spring Flooding Slider

We’ve compiled some resources to help you keep track of river levels and locate sandbags and shelter areas if needed:

Flood tips from the American Red Cross of Greater Idaho:

Heed Flood Warnings:

Listen to your local radio and TV stations for updated flood information. A flood WATCH means flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area. A food WARNING means flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground immediately and stay there.

Stay away from flood waters:

If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankle or if you come across a flooded road while driving, stop, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.

Share preparedness tips with every member of your household. The best protection is to be prepared.

Advocacy Efforts:

Leaders from Boise Regional REALTORS® (BRR) joined more than 9,600 REALTORS® from around the country in Washington, D.C. last month, to advance key real estate issues on behalf of current and future homeowners during the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) 2017 REALTOR® Legislative Meetings.

BRR leaders met with Idaho Senators Crapo and Risch, and Representatives Labrador and Simpson on Capitol Hill to discuss the reauthorization of the NFIP, as well as the importance of protecting the mortgage interest deduction and 1031 tax-deferred exchanges. These kinds of programs and incentives are essential tools for sustainable homeownership.

REALTORS® Announce 2016 Endorsements

Boise Regional REALTORS® is pleased to announce its upcoming elections endorsements, for November 8th.  A committee of volunteers comprised of REALTORS® and Affiliate members, the Political Affairs Committee, reviewed upcoming ballot issues and a number of local election races to determine this election cycle’s endorsements.  After careful review of candidate interviews and issue presentations, the Political Affairs Committee made the following endorsements of candidates and ballot issues:

  • TJ Thomson – Ada County Commissioner District 2 (4 year term)
  • David Eberle – ACHD District 2 (4 year term)
  • Sara Baker – ACHD District 5 (4 year term)
  • Support – W.A.R.D. (West Ada Recreation District) Aquatics Centers Bond Initiative

“Each election cycle we have the privilege of giving our association and industry a voice on key issues and political races,” said Phil Mount, Chair of the Political Affairs Committee.  “This year was no different from previous years, where a committee of volunteers with diverse backgrounds and political party affiliations join together as the REALTOR® Party to determine the best course of action for endorsements.”

Speaking to the decision-making process, Boise Regional REALTORS® President Carey Farmer stated, “We are proud of the thoughtful deliberation and selection process, and also thankful for the time spent by our members to determine who the REALTOR® Party should support this election.  Committee members took time away from their businesses and family, to ensure our industry continues to have a voice in the community’s future.”

Elections will be held on Tuesday, November 8th.  For information on registration and where to vote, please visit http://www.idahovotes.gov/ or https://adacounty.id.gov/elections/.

Get involved, build relationships, and make an impact!

Volunteering doesn’t just benefit BRR – it’s hopefully beneficial to our member volunteers, too. If you didn’t have a chance to attend the September Fuel Your Business Luncheon, here’s the recap:  Keri Davidson with The Idaho Nonprofit Center, Allison Dunn of Action Coach Business Coaching, and Carey Farmer, BRR’s 2016 President, shared their insights into how volunteerism can benefit your business:

  1. Volunteering for a cause or organization you are passionate about helps to connect you with like-minded people to build friendships and personal connections.
  2. Volunteering with, and leading groups, will give you leadership insights you can bring to your business. You will learn from others, seeing how they lead and serve, taking their best practices (or avoiding bad practices!) when you step up to lead.
  3. Don’t volunteer to get business – rather, by getting involved and being authentic – you’ll earn business. People will get to know you, and want to do business with you.
  4. You can connect your clients with volunteer opportunities, especially your out-of-state clients who are looking for ways to engage with their new community.
  5. Not all volunteer opportunities require a lot of time, or long-term service. Many opportunities, like Rake Up Boise, take just one day or a few hours. Find a volunteering mix that works for you based on your schedule. And, you don’t have to do everything your chosen group offers – pick those where you can have the most impact.

And finally…

  1. Once you’re involved with a group or organization, encourage others to participate! Sometimes, asking is all someone needs to get started. Help identify future leaders in current volunteers!

Looking for a place to volunteer? BRR offers a wide variety of opportunities and is a fantastic place to get your feet wet as a volunteer. Work alongside your peers and make an impact on your industry, and your business! The BRR Call for Committees is open now! Learn more about the different committees and submit an application at boirealtors.com/committees.
